Uterus didelphys is a rare congenital condition in which a woman is born with two separate uteruses. It is caused by a failure of the two Müllerian ducts to fuse together during fetal development. The Müllerian ducts are the structures that develop into the female reproductive organs.

Women with uterus didelphys typically have two separate cervices (openings to the uterus) and two separate vaginas. They may also have two ovaries and two fallopian tubes.

Uterus didelphys is usually not associated with any symptoms. However, some women with this condition may experience:

Painful menstruation
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Difficulty getting pregnant
Miscarriage
Ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus)
Treatment for uterus didelphys is not usually necessary. However, if a woman is experiencing symptoms, surgery may be an option. Surgery can be used to:

Join the two uteruses together
Create a single cervix
Create a single vagina
The decision of whether or not to have surgery is a personal one. Women with uterus didelphys should discuss the risks and benefits of surgery with their doctor.

Here are some additional information about uterus didelphys:

Uterus didelphys is a rare condition. It affects only about 1 in 3,000 women.
The cause of uterus didelphys is not fully understood. However, it is thought to be caused by a genetic mutation.
Uterus didelphys does not increase the risk of cancer.
Women with uterus didelphys can still have a normal pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby. However, they are at an increased risk of complications, such as preterm birth and miscarriage.
If you have any concerns about your reproductive health, talk to your doctor.
